A few words about Benoit Sokal

I will never forget the day, I learned about, Benoit Sokal’s, death. He died on 28th May 2021.

It was a cloudy, morning in Athens, Greece. If I can recall correctly. After having my, every day, morning coffee. I checked the news by chance on my tablet. Oh God! I call to mind, seeing a Black & White old photo of B. Sokal.

I said to myself in, few seconds, of thinking. “This cannot be good. What has happened? Why did they publish a B&W photo, instead of a colored one?” Yes, inside my heart, I could feel that something terrible took place, on that day.

Then I read through the lines. Benoit Sokal passed away. As we say in Greek, “Hope is the last notion that dies”. I told myself, “Relax George, this might be yet another internet hoax.”

But no, the source was reliable. Benoit Sokal, left us, so suddenly. His genius mind and heart, gone to heaven. Immediately, I started crying. I mourned Benoit Sokal’s death for months. I could not believe it was true. I still can’t swallow this large pill…

He seemed to have so much life, left in him. But alas, a serious, long – term disease, had caught up with him, first.

Benoit Sokal, was, my most favorite, videogame creator. He had limitless imagination. He was a romantic, sweet, very calm, highly sensitive, warm, man. And, of course, a creative genius.

His passing, is a big loss, for the entirety, of the gaming community. And for art in general. It is a momentous happiness for us gamers and adventurers.

The fact that a true, great artist, Benoit Sokal. Put so much effort and work. And dealt with the amazing, modern, folk art, of videogames.

Given that, before becoming a videogame plaster. B. Sokal was a successful, comic book author.

I have played all of Benoit Sokal’s surreal, amazing videogames. And unlocked all available Steam achievements, in Syberia 3 and its 1 and only, DLC. And also, of the free demo of Syberia: The World Before [Syberia 4].

I have played Syberia 1 [2002] & Syberia 2 [2004]. 5 times from beginning to the end, each. And Amerzone more than 5 times.

I love Sinking Island, just as well. I own it, in Big Fish Games, PC application. Also, I have 2, very pretty copies of Sinking Island, in DVD sleeve cases.

In my collection, I have 3 Syberia Collector’s Edition copies: Syberia 1 & 2 (Ultimate Collection) for PC. ADVENTURE CLASSICS: Syberia Collection for PC. And Syberia 3 Collector’s Edition [Day One Edition], for PC/MAC.

I have watched and read. Studied very carefully, all interviews of Benoit Sokal, available online. Even in Greek. Greek is my native language.

So, as you can tell, I can proudly say, I am the ultimately authority, on Benoit Sokal’s videogames work. I am ready to review, Syberia 3. As I have previously reviewed, Amerzone, Syberia, Syberia 2, Paradise & Sinking Island.

Story

Syberia 3 story starts, where Syberia 2 ending left us all, in much suspense. Kate Walker is found, dying, from cold and possibly, hunger, at the far north of Siberia.

She is cared, for by her good, old friends, the Youkols. Those of you, who finished the Syberia 2 masterpiece, will remember, the remarkable, Youkol tribe, of North Siberia.

Then, our dearest Kate Walker is taken to a big, gloomy, Russian, Psychiatric clinic in the fictional town of, Valsembor.

In Syberia 3, it becomes obvious. That, Benoit Sokal changed and became wiser, as he was growing older.

This, testifies to B. Sokal’s, overall intelligence. The fact that he changed his stories. Accordingly, to the time of their creation. And that he contemplates on each era’s different worries, humanity faces.

This is exactly what human evolution is all about. To take in, adapt, to changing conditions. To move with a times, as Japanese wisdom says.

This is what successful, men and women have to do, in their careers. Embrace the shifts, in the world around them. Make their stories reflect, these alterations.

This is the proof of Benoit Sokal’s success. If he had chosen to tell us, another Syberia 1 & 2 story. It would have been a mistake, failure for him and for gamers. He did not.

So, Sokal smelled the air of the future. And he gave us a whole new story. But, at the same time, keeping the legacy and ties, of his, incredible, past work.

Amerzone and Syberia 1. Sokal’s earliest videogames. Were made during the end of the 20th and start of 21st century. As a result, Benoit Sokal, tried to do, a sort of critical evaluation, of the horrible 20th century, and it’s totally unforgettable, dramatic, events.

In Syberia 3, Benoit Sokal opens his vision. In Syberia 3 you, will find mysteries and events that are clearly linked, to the contemporary headache, of climate change, and pollution. This means, that Benoit Sokal, had ecological concerns, additionally.

The story of Syberia 3 is quite interesting and, brand new. It speaks about true friendship, love, courage, determination and inner strength. I strongly suggest you play Syberia 1 & 2, timeless games. Before starting with Syberia 3.

Syberia 3 story, while it is, quite good. It cannot compare to Syberia 1 & 2 complexity and greatness. Syberia 3, does not have, the feel, of a masterwork. Nor does it have the nostalgia and magic world of B. Sokal’s previous games. It feels like a good, up to date, story.

What I have to tell you. Is that the real weaknesses of Syberia 3, do not concern, its script.

Graphics

Syberia 3 visuals, are made with the Unity Engine. This is a cross – platform game engine, originally created by Apple. It is a popular engine.

Syberia 3 is the 1st videogame of Benoit Sokal, which is played in 3D. What is interesting. Is, that Sokal himself, boldly said. That he was, at first, afraid of making a videogame, in 100% 3D.

But then as he begun to work on it, with the French, Microids team. He overcame his fear. Syberia: The World Before is also in 100% 3D world.

I ran Syberia 3 on 2 different PCs. One has a relatively new, 24’’ inches monitor of 1920X1080 resolution by AOC. With 75 Hz, Refresh Rate. And the other PC has a simple, 18.5’’ inches monitor by ASUS. With 60 Hz Refresh Rate. Resolution is at 1366X768.

I did not have any bother, with any of these, monitors.  Also, Syberia 3 is a game that has good stability. It never crashed to the desktop.

Nevertheless, I do not know if Syberia 3 natively supports 4K, ultra-widescreen technology. If this is the case, it is unacceptable, for 2017, standards.

But, do check this link. To see if, you can make Syberia 3 run, if you have, a very big, monitor.

The graphics of Syberia 3, are highly detailed. As one would expect, from an influential artist, like Benoit Sokal.

I have never seen, that detailed human faces, in any other videogame. For example, red cheeks, due to the cold, harsh, climate, of Siberia. Or men with missing, rotten teeth.

The font of texts and dialogues in Syberia 3. Ιs the same as it is in Syberia 1 & 2. This is very good. Given that it is big, very legible. It looks childlike and very pretty.

When Syberia 3 auto saves, you will see at the upper – right corner of the screen. A beautiful symbol with 2 moving gears. This is a cool effect, which reminded me, of the remarkable, main menu screen of Syberia 1.

If the graphics of Syberia 3 had more vivid color to them, the game would really shine. Given that, they are so nicely detailed.

This is one thing I have seen, in many French, videogames. And I never liked it. Their colors look dull. German videogames, on the contrary have superb, lively, colors. After all, my favorite painter, Vincent Van Gogh, was greatly known, for using, playful colors.

In Syberia 3, frame rates drop badly. This happens quite often. At first, I thought it was a snag of my old, AMD FX-4310, 4 cores CPU.

But then I read some reviews about the PS4, console version of the game. The reviewer, had the exact same pain, I faced.

So, it has nothing to do with your PC hardware. Even if your PC, is not, the most powerful.

I am almost certain, that the low FPS issues of Syberia 3. Is simply, the result of dated hardware? That the developers used. Syberia 3 is, a low budget production, after all.

The, gorgeous main protagonist, of Syberia series, Kate Walker. Is a woman with Mediterranean beauty, and normal, very feminine, proportions. Brown hair and big brown eyes. At the same time, her amazing tall and slim figure. Enchants her with an air of sweet command!

The fact, that she loves so much, the tribe of the Youkols. Which have, the exact opposite body type, to Kate [they are short and stocky]. I find a bit comical, but not uncommon.

Syberia 3 has some pre-rendered videos. But their overall quality is lower than the in-game graphics. This is normal for a 2017, recent videogame.

It is my prediction, that at some point, pre-rendered videos will be a thing of the past. Due to the, rapid evolution, of synchronous graphics engines.

The most serious setback with Syberia 3 graphics. Is the failed camera layout. In most 3D, 3rd person perspective videogames. Since the time of early Tomb Raider games, the camera, cleverly follows the character, from behind her/his back.

But, in Syberia 3, the camera is not fixed behind Kate Walker. Instead, it keeps changing angles. Which makes it very hard, to make progress, through the game.

I find this a stupid idea. They should have learned from other adventure titles. Old and new. And made it the right way. But sadly, for us, poor gamers, this is not the case.

One last negative aspect, of Syberia 3, is the display, of snow. It has nothing to do, with the greatness of snow, in Syberia 2. Seriously, I have seen, better presentation, of snow. In Carnivores: Ice Age. A game of 2001!

What I find clever as a design decision. Is, that in the small tab, before starting Syberia 3. You can choose the resolution in which the game will run. And the graphics quality. Depending on, how powerful, your graphics card is.

There are 3 choices: Fast, Good, Beautiful. I played the game in the “Beautiful” mode.

Other than the, consequential, camera issues. The graphics of Syberia 3 are beautifully detailed and very pleasant to look at. They will satisfy most, gamers.

Music & Audio

Syberia 3 soundtrack is composed. By, the excellent, acclaimed, Jewish – American composer, Inon Zur. This man composed the essential soundtrack of Syberia 2, amongst many other works.

Syberia 3 soundtrack has many soft, beautiful, romantic, epic, passionate or scary, tracks. I listen to Syberia 3 OST every day. I really love it!

There are 22 tracks overall. Most of them have large duration. You can find the Syberia 3 soundtrack. By buying the Syberia 3 Deluxe Upgrade in Steam. By purchasing the Syberia 3: The Complete Journey from GOG. Or finding it in Spotify platform.

The voice actress of Kate Walker is the same as in Syberia 1 & 2. This is very positive.

However, the actor who plays Oscar has changed. Yes, our dear old friend Oscar is back in Syberia 3! Maybe they could not find the same actor. Or, maybe he passed away. 10 years is a long time indeed.

Last I heard his voice, was in Benoit Sokal’s, Sinking Island, of 2007. The new actor who acts as Oscar, is not as good, as the old actor, was.

Most, voice actors, in Syberia 3, do a good job. Such as, the one that speaks as, Captain Obo.

Syberia 3 is translated, available in 11 languages: English, French [which was the mother tongue of Benoit Sokal], Italian, German, Spanish, modern Chinese, traditional Chinese, Korean, Dutch, Polish and of course, Russian. Lots of work done there.

When, Syberia 3 was first released. It suffered from serious sound cuts. Voices or music were not played properly. But after the many updates, Syberia 3 works okay. Also, voices of the actors are recorded fine.

However, there are still some rare cuts in human voices. But they are hardly noticeable. Lip sync, of the English version I played, was not very good.

Sound effects in Syberia 3 are quite rich, nicely done. They create an enchanting atmosphere. Dialogues in Syberia 3 are very well written. As expected, from a high quality, Benoit Sokal, videogame.

Syberia 3 automatically detects what sound device you have, activated. For example, if you are wearing headphones, you can see the auto detection, in the options menu.

But you can change it manually also. If you wish so. There are 2 options available: Speakers & Headphones.

The only con I spotted. Is that when Kate moves, there are no, walking sound effects at all. However, when you play as Oscar, as he walks or runs, you can hear his body, making cool, mechanical, sounds.

In conclusion, Syberia 3 music & sound is a very good asset of the game. Most players will enjoy it.

Gameplay – Plot – Puzzles

One of the biggest problems of Syberia 3. Is the fact that the development team, never created a game manual. Not in digital or physical form.

Of course, paper manuals are largely, a thing of the past. Because we have to save the poor trees from destruction. But, for a game as complicated as Syberia 3. There should be a manual. All previous B. Sokal games had beautiful manuals.

The commands of Syberia 3 are so peculiar. I was so confused that for a short time, I had stopped playing. Because I was unable to solve the first, easy, big, brain teaser.

The reason I was so baffled. Was that there had been a long time, since I played, a console videogame. However, I am obliged to say, that. If you visit the options > controls, tab. You will see an explanatory picture of the layout. But, still, the lack of a good manual is noticeable, by me and many users.

Syberia 3 fully supports Xbox One, or Xbox 360 gamepads. And PlayStation gamepads. I played it with my, very old, Xbox 360 Windows controller.

Not a single problem, I found. The game immediately recognized and logged my trusty, old, genuine gamepad, from good old, Microsoft.

In general, it is not an exaggeration to say, that the average gamer. Will spend more time trying to figure out, the unnecessarily complex gameplay, of Syberia 3. Rather than solving the riddles themselves.

In Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (2006), of Ragnar Tornquist. That was the 1st full 3D adventure game of this, younger than Sokal, videogame plaster. Gamers could not use any gamepad.

Because the keys were not automatically mapped. And if one tries to enter his own controls, they are not saved. This is a shame. Because it would be easier to play Dreamfall with a gamepad. Rather than keyboard and mouse.

On the contrary, in Syberia 3 one can use perfectly and at the same time both his mouse and keyboard. Plus, his synchronous, gamepad.

I learned slowly to use them, turn and turnabout. Because, for some spots, a gamepad, is more suited. While, for others, the mouse will do the job better.

Syberia 3, has quite high system requirements for the PC version. It is demanding, especially for your graphics card. So, it would be cheaper to play it on some modern console such as Xbox One. If you own one.

The game uses the auto save function. So, there is no way to manually save, whenever you wish. But auto saves are often done. This facilitates the game.

For the first time in a Benoit Sokal videogame. There are multiple options in dialogues. They can also affect the progress of the game. But not the script. These conversation related enigmas, can be quite hard to figure out. And they require careful thinking.

In Syberia 3, I saw display of affection, towards animals, and Kate’s friends. Many women are tender and loving. This can be a wonderful thing for us men.

There is, a marvelous fulfilment, in Syberia 3. That awards the player, if he shows his tenderness to his in – game animal friends. It is one of the best Steam achievements, I have ever seen.

Syberia 3 rewards diligence, method, observance, kindness, curiosity, sweetness, warmth and sensitivity. These are trophies I have never seen in any other videogame, ever. You can see this for yourselves in the superb, Steam and GOG, sum, of 40 accomplishments. I unlocked all of them, of course.

There is an amusing Greek expression. When a person, male or female is very clever. We call him, a cat! So, the cat, named Benoit Sokal, knew that owls are wise birds, with a comical face.

So, he shows an owl, making unusual nods, and even blinks its eye! I laughed with Sokal’s cute, humor.

It made a lasting impression on me. That through Kate Walker’s big, brown, intense, eyes. Sokal, showed care, for a dead sea squid.

There is no doubt in my mind, that mister Sokal, was a very warm-hearted man. In Syberia 3, as in all B. Sokal’s games, humanism is ever present.

It happened to me, only once, to get seriously stuck in Syberia 3. After solving, a contemplation puzzle, the wrong way. There is a simple and reliable solution. If you come to a dead end, during Syberia 3. Just enter the load menu. And load the previous saved game.

If you want to know, whether you solved a riddle, successfully. Just listen to the music of the game. It changes to a happy, rewarding, short tune. Just like in Syberia 1 & 2.

The autosave system is drafted in a smart way. It has 2 or 3 distinct saved slots. If you play the game twice. You can play Syberia 3 from the start, and watch the final cutscene, when you finish the game. If you wish to do so.

In addition, Syberia 3 keeps separate save slots, for the basic game and the DLC: An Automaton with a plan. Furthermore, you can see the exact date & time, plus a clear screenshot. So, you can tell, precisely, what you want to load, from your HDD or SSD drive.

Finally, there is, a continue tab. For less experienced gamers. To avoid messing, with saved files.

Syberia 3 has the cleverest, most efficient, saving system, I have ever seen, in a modern videogame.

Syberia 3 enigmas are significantly tougher, than all previous Sokal’s videogames. Most of them are, mechanical riddles. But I also encountered an arithmetic enigma. Which, sadly, I was unable to defeat, without some help, from a walkthrough.

Syberia 3 enigmas are mostly competently blueprinted, original and interesting. They are not insanely hard to figure out. But they require a lot of careful meditation.

The player cannot combine items, from the inventory. You can only use them, directly, to the game’s world.

It seems that Benoit Sokal did not like politicians. He portrays them as, useless, lazy, selfish, power – hungry individuals. They keep giving promises to the people, they never fulfill. And they are completely indifferent, uninterested, towards society.

I myself reckon that creative, hard – working men and women. Detest politicians. I see them as incompetent, greedy, mobsters. They are also, often violent, to their women and children. As far as I know.

In Syberia 3, Kate Walker, occasionally uses her muscular strength, in order to proceed, through the game. This never happened in Syberia 1 & 2.

Nevertheless, this is not as bad as it may sound. For me it is comforting to know, that Kate Walker has strength, together with a big brain. She looks, a sturdy, tall, brunette woman, anyway.

In Syberia 3 there are enemies of Kate who carry Kalashnikovs (AK-47s). This is an outrageous idea of Benoit Sokal. Given the soft, sweet style of Syberia 1 & 2.

Despite this, these guns are skillfully sketched. As I wrote, in my Sinking Island review, B. Sokal knows weapons excellently.

There is a scene in Syberia 3 were 2 good friends: Kate Walker and Sarah Steiner, hug each other. It was so touching for me to see, 2 delightful girls, loving each other.

We all know how nasty, malicious, women can be to each other. But, in Sokal’s world, you can see miracles take place!

Syberia 3 has a much more computer – like outline. This can be clearly seen. In the games menus diagram. But the game menus organizing are excellent.

The plot of Syberia 3 moves very slowly. As it does in all B. Sokal’s videogames.

Looking at some Youkol, folk girl. She reminded me a lot of a very pretty, Russian, girl from Syberia. I used to date, many years ago. Sadly, for me, she was in a relationship, with some guy.

But, later on, I figured out that my attraction to her was mostly sexual. Than emotional. She had, very different life mentality, than mine. And I could not possibly support her, oversized, dreams and goals.

But eventually, I found a very dear companion. She is a very pretty, warm hearted Greek girl. The fact that she is eventually married is heartbreaking for me.

I cannot be with her now. But my attraction to her was forceful, emotional and very affectionate. She is a woman I admire a lot. She is a true sweetheart.

Aggeliki [the name is Greek and not her real name, in order to protect her true identity of course]. She was the first girl in my life that showed me real love and caring.

I will never ever forget Aggeliki. She will always have my heart. She reminds me of the quiet, shy, very cute friend of Kate Walker, Sarah Steiner.

One of the greatest successes of Benoit Sokal, in all his videogames. Is the way he portrays all of his female main characters. Including, Kate Walker, of course.

Sokal, never sexualized women. On the contrary, he pictures them as firm, decisive, emotional, thoughtful, human beings. The way females really are.

Myself, I always adored, deeply loved, girls. Because I have seen how clever, hardworking, lovely, cute, soft, adorable creatures, they are.

Furthermore, as an original feminist I am. I am powerfully convinced that women are better, than men.

Certainly, more gentle, less violent, sadistic than men will always be. In fact, I care for women, more than I love myself.

Loading sequences are very long in Syberia 3. Especially if you do not have the game installed on an M.2 NVMe SSD. So, this makes gameplay, very slow, indeed.

On the bright side. For the first time ever, in a B. Sokal, videogame. Pixel hunting. That seriously bugged all of his previous, digital works. Is now, minimized, a lot.

Thanks, to a more advanced, exploration system. That shows the player, most of the hotspots on the screen. When, Kate Walker passes right next to them. But you must keep your eyes open!

Syberia 3 is a game of exploration. And, hard puzzles, of course. If you explore adeptly. The game itself rewards the gamer. Thanks to its forward–meditation mechanisms.

I love exploring videogames myself. I was very good in Syberia 3 in this field. The design of the entire game is impressive.

Syberia 3 is designed to work best on Windows 10 PCs. I installed Windows 10. Because game performed poorly, on my earlier, Windows 7 64-bit setup.

But, Windows 10 is a solid, enjoyable, Operating System, in my opinion.

Conclusively, the gameplay of Syberia 3 is, quite innovative and fun. Enigmas are solid, hard and enjoyable. The only setback is the very long and frequent loading screens.

Other than that, it is an improvement, over all past, B. Sokal’s games.

Syberia 3: An Automaton with a plan [DLC]

Graphics, sound and gameplay, are all the same, as in Syberia 3, main game.

Syberia 3: An Automaton with a plan, you can get for free. If you buy the Collector Edition of Syberia 3. If you can find this big box, now.

Otherwise, you can get this, one and only, available DLC, for Syberia 3. For less than 1 euro. If you purchase it on a sale.

Syberia 3: An Automaton with a plan is the shortest, in overall gameplay length, DLC, I have seen so far.

But its quality is very good. In my opinion, it is better than the base game.

The DLC has some very interesting, Director’s tricks. That reminded me of old Black & White movies of Charlie Chaplin. I used to watch years ago.

In these sequences there is no sound or video. Only good-looking pictures with little texts that explain the story.

If you want to see, a much more joyful and rewarding ending, to Syberia 3. You have to play, this small, DLC.

However, Syberia 3: An Automaton with a plan as a story, feels a little out of reference, to the dramatic ending, of the Syberia 3 main game.

Riddles in the DLC are very easy and straightforward. Compared to Syberia 3 main game. It seems as if the developers made it so easy. So, everyone, can see, the happy ending.

Also, there are no extra accomplishments, to unlock, for the DLC. Reason for this must be its short length. Although it would be nice, if the developers had added, a few attainments.

Syberia 3: An Automaton with a plan. Is an excellent DLC for Syberia 3. Which adds a breath of pure optimism to Syberia 3 ending.

I highly recommend you play it. I loved it!

Conclusions

I had so much fun, with Syberia 3. That I played this game 3 times, from start to finish. In total, I spent, 45 hours of my gaming time, with Syberia 3. And, as you can observe, in my authentic, screenshots collection. I unlocked all 40/40 Steam achievements.

Okay, maybe, Syberia 3 is not exactly, a classic. Like Amerzone, Syberia 1 and Syberia 2 are. But to enjoy a videogame, it does not have to be, exactly, a tour de force.

Graphics are beautifully detailed, and up to date, for 2017, standards.

Syberia 3 setbacks are: the unpleasant, camera design. Frame rate trouble, and loading times.

But the story is good, satisfactory. The puzzles are adeptly designed, for the most part. The soundtrack by Inon Zur is excellent. Sound is very good. Most of voice acting is influential, distinguished.

Dialogues and characters are extremely interesting. Old friends are back. The story is brand new. But, at the same time, it keeps its connections to Syberia 1 & 2.

I love Kate Walker as a heroine, so much. I think, she is so, special. That I actually wrote this poem, for her. I hope you like it!

So, is Syberia 3 worth your time? If, you are a follower, of Benoit Sokal’s work. It definitely is. If you like dramatic stories, you will enjoy Syberia 3. But it is not a game for all gamers. I insist.

Most ladies will love Syberia 3. Because of the female lead, Kate Walker. And its soft, affectionate, feel.

So, do I recommend Syberia 3? Yes, but mainly to girls, sensitive, emotional men, or Benoit Sokal’s fans.
